Torrance Art Museum showing ‘SPAM the musical’

Located in Southern California, next to Los Angeles, Torrance became famous through Fatboy Slims ‘Praise you’ video and its High School that was used as a setting for the TV series Beverly Hills, 90210 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And of course it has a small but fine Art Museum. This is where ‘SPAM the musical’ will be shown from July 16 – August 27.

Incident is an experimental platform based in France, Canada, Senegal and on the Internet since 1994. ‘SPAM the musical’ is featured in their best of collection on ‘Pollution’.

“Questions of compromised electronic identity are also played out by Boris Eldagsen in ‘SPAM the Musical’; a genre-bending, theatrical and very funny episode subtitled The Lonely Girls. Three young women with a variety of accents, dressed in pyjamas, battle for a hairbrush pretend-microphone via which to relate texts taken from actual spam emails from love-lorn Eastern Europeans and Africans requesting help to claim inheritances, giving out false names, lying about their height—all delivered with disarming sincerity.

The additional Deleted Scene is also a take on image manipulation, but in total contrast to the visual fluffiness of the first part. A woman sits in a spotlight in a cabaret setting wearing a sequinned top and smudged mascara, while three sets of anonymous hands move her arms and mouth to mime a bluesy version of the AC/DC song “TNT (I’m Dynamite).” She is a marionette at their mercy and the song mocks her helplessness. It is compulsive to watch, but very disturbing, hinting perhaps at the systemic malignancy behind scamming and identity theft.”

54th Venice Biennale / Internet Pavilion screening ‘SPAM the musical’

Fondazione March invited ‘SPAM the musical’ to become part of the second Internet Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale.

Hosted by the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, the opening will take place Thursday June 2nd, 2011 at the island of San Servolo.

SCREENING: 27th International Sarajevo Winter Festival

Entering Bosnia / Herzegovina for the first time: ‘SPAM the musical’ will be screened at the Sarajevo Winter Festival. Since 1984 this festival has traditionally been held under the auspices of the Council of Europe, the European Union and UNESCO. This year’s theme will be ’The Art of Love’. A subject that is totally up our alley.

“The current role of the internet and its affect on the characters of identities is pointed out by Boris Eldagsen’s video SPAM the musical. The content is based on Spam E-Mails that flood our accounts every day with countless ‘Fake Identities’ and promises. The ones that drop into our mail inbox bother us with stories of how to enlarge too small seeming body parts, how a certain drug is making us happier or is helping us in gaining more success or how we won or suddenly inherited an incredible amount of money. It could be so easy … Unfortunately these promises don’t go without ulterior motives. In giving access to all your private details such as your home address or credit card information the act of loosing your identity in the World Wide Web starts and the creation of somebody who appears to be the same as you and spends all your money is just the beginning. This loss of identity often accompanies viruses that destroy your computer systems, body or character.”

Pixxelpoint is one of the most successful and renowned festivals of new media art in Slovenia and also abroad. And in its 11th edition, it invited ‘SPAM the musical’ to come to Nova Gorica. So we did. As part of ‘Triple Conjunction: Magic, Myth and Mutations.

Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) is held since 1959 and gradually it has become one of most respectable and prestigious film-forums in the world. In 1973 MIFF was registered by the International Federation of Film-producers associations (FIAPF) as an «A» class film festival alongside with those in Berlin, Cannes, San-Sebastian, Karlovy Vary and Venice.

In 2009 Media Forum — the most uncommon program at the Moscow cinema festival — celebrates its tenth anniversary. The most avant-garde film experiments, video art and performative multimedia art – multiscreen installation of Yang Fudong, video works of Eve Sussman and Jasper Just, Interactive performance of Ryoichi Kurokawa – were shown at the Media Forum. Media Forum has its own contest of video works involving artists from more than twenty countries and its own lecture programm, during which world headliners hold their master classes, round tables and club events. Subject-matter of the festival 2009 is “New Imaginary: expanding the cinema bothers”. Stressing the idea of syntesis of cinema and visual arts and new ways of creation of visual works, Media Forum always proves that cinematography is in fact much wider than is shown in audience halls. It may be interactive and multiscreen, it may develop a special space enviroment, which naturally includes a spectator, and movies themselves may last for days resembling classical paintings.

Media Forum as action is an exchange of ideas, infusion of new forces into contemporary culture and vice versa. It is an attempt to demonstrate the logic of new thought and new communications. At the moment it is inside media culture that new ideas go through trial and approbation, ideas that cannot be realized in contemporary art context.
